Doctoral Studies

Since 1 February 2022, the University of Neuchâtel has offered a doctoral programme in social work in partnership with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO), and starting 1 January 2025, with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). The programme has been supported by swissuniversities since its inception. This course of study, which culminates in the title PhD in Social Work, contributes to the development of social work as an academic discipline while also providing new academic resources for practitioners.

The doctoral programme offers specific methodological and theoretical training in social work, structured and adapted to the needs of doctoral students. The doctoral programme is open to students with a UAS Master’s in Social Work or a Swiss university Master’s in Social Sciences, Law or Economics. The doctoral programme includes a series of courses in the first three semesters. At the same time, the doctoral students elaborate their dissertation project. After that, they have five to seven semesters to complete their dissertation. Successful doctoral students receive a doctorate in social work after completing and defending their thesis.
